Stories, a title that immediately points at plurality, wants to account the many ways in which Andy Rocchelli pursued the lively underlayer of reality beyond the news, retracing the complex fabric of faces, stories unwritten in the headlines.

The exhibition, set up in the newly renovated areas of fifteen-century clostrum inside Roma in Trastevere’s museum, revisits two main guidelines of Andy Rocchelli’s work between 2009 and 2014, that focused on several most relevant events of that timeframe.
On one side the Mediterranean crisis – from Italy’s immigration issue to the Arab Spring at large and the consequent movement of peoples and ideals. On the other the theme that most occupied his efforts: the consequences of URSS’ disgregation – from civil insurgences in north Caucasus to the ever-renewing identity of Russia itself, conveyed through the portraits of Russian Interiors, to the more recent events of riots in Kiev and Maidan Square, that ultimately led to Ukrania’s political stand-off and its tragic consequences.

Stories, sottolineando già nel suo titolo l’importanza della dimensione plurale, vuole raccontare i molti modi in cui Andy Rocchelli ha inseguito il sostrato vivo della realtà oltre il rapido susseguirsi delle notizie, che sono state spesso il primo filo da cui iniziare a ricostruire una trama più complessa e articolata del mondo che ci è intorno.

La mostra, allestita negli spazi espositivi, appena rinnovati, del chiostro seicentesco del Museo di Roma in Trastevere ripercorre due linee guida approfondite da Andy Rocchelli fra il 2009 e il 2014 a partire da alcuni degli eventi che recentemente più hanno segnato il nostro tempo: da un lato la crisi del Mediterraneo che dall’Italia, attraverso al questione dell’immigrazione si allarga fino ai giorni della Primavera Araba e ai movimenti di popoli fisici e ideali che ne sono conseguiti, e dall’altro il tema che forse più di tutti è stato al centro del suo interesse, la questione delle conseguenze della disgregazione dell’Unione Sovietica, dalle rivolte civili nel nord del Caucaso all’identità in costante mutazione della stessa Russia, espressa nei ritratti di Russian Interiors e nell’indagine delle molteplici sfaccettature delle sue orbite d’influenza, fino agli ultimi eventi che dalle prime manifestazioni di Kiev a Piazza Maidan hanno portato allo stallo politico ucraino e alle sue tragiche conseguenze.

Andy Rocchelli è scomparso il 24 maggio 2014 a Sloviansk dove si trovava per documentare la guerra civile tra separatisti filorussi ed esercito ucraino.
